On 25 October 2017, EU Debate Club was held in Common Room (606) of Frontier Building at Rokkodai campus of Kobe University.
3 participants first checked some facts about the extent of Internet control in various countries and the increased use of social media. The debate first focused on the need of governments to access the online private data due to national security concerns and the need to ensure information privacy for Internet users. The EU tends to have stricter laws on data privacy than the USA, but recent terrorist attacks urged the EU to become more active in preventing terrorism through a wider Internet control.
Participants also discussed how effective the Internet control can be in preventing terrorism and concluded that even though more online monitoring has become necessary, a clear legislation and guidance for online users is also needed. Participants could familiarize themselves with this topic by referring to their own experience with online data privacy when using popular social media such as Facebook.

EU Debate Club is designed to familiarise students with the variety of opinions on the EU-related topics and we will continue to select important and relevant debate topics.
